(Phnom Penh): Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Acting Head of State of Cambodia, called on Francophonie member states to deepen cooperation in order to strengthen the organisation’s influence, effectiveness, and future development.
The remarks were made on Wednesday (Jun. 17) during a meeting with Dacian Julien Cioloș, Romanian Presidential Adviser and candidate for Secretary General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), at the Senate’s Solidarity Palace in Phnom Penh.
According to Senate Spokesperson Chea Thyrith, Samdech Techo welcomed Cioloș and his delegation, expressing confidence that the visit would further enhance Cambodia–Romania relations and strengthen cooperation within the Francophonie.
Cioloș conveyed greetings from Romanian President Nicușor Dan to King Norodom Sihamoni and Samdech Techo Hun Sen. He also noted the strong bilateral ties between Cambodia and Romania and their shared commitment to expanding cooperation.
As a candidate for the OIF’s Secretary General, Cioloș outlined his vision for strengthening multilateralism and promoting greater international cooperation through the Francophonie. He also congratulated Cambodia on hosting the Francophonie Summit in November, describing it as an important opportunity for the kingdom to play a more active role within the organisation.
In response, Samdech Techo underlined that the Francophonie, with its broad membership, should foster closer collaboration among member states, particularly in communication, trade, and investment. He underscored that stronger economic partnerships could serve as a foundation for deeper political relations and called for greater mutual support among members on the international stage.
Cioloș also informed Samdech Techo that the Romanian president and a delegation of business leaders are expected to visit Cambodia for the Francophonie Summit in November. Samdech Techo welcomed the planned visit and said he looked forward to receiving the Romanian delegation.
