(Phnom Penh): On 25 June 2026, Cambodia and Japan signed financing agreements worth 25.426 billion Japanese yen (approximately USD 171.3 million) to support education and irrigation development projects in Cambodia.

The agreements were signed by Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Pornmoniroth, and Sanui Kazuma, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Cambodia Office.

The package comprises a grant aid agreement worth 1.189 billion yen (about USD 7.5 million) for the Establishment of the Teacher Education College in Kampong Cham Province and a concessional loan agreement worth 24.237 billion yen (about USD 163.8 million) for the Southwest Phnom Penh Irrigation and Drainage Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (III).

The education project will upgrade the existing teacher training institution in Kampong Cham into a Teacher Education College through the construction of a STEM building and an assembly hall, while providing educational equipment and teaching resources for both new and existing facilities.

Meanwhile, the irrigation project will rehabilitate and improve irrigation and drainage systems under the Roleang Chrey and Kandal Stueng–Bati subprojects, covering Kampong Speu, Takeo, and Kandal provinces.

The project is expected to boost agricultural productivity, improve irrigation capacity, reduce flood risks in vulnerable areas, and enhance the livelihoods of local communities.
