(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed relevant ministries and institutions to strengthen food quality standards to better protect public health.

Speaking at a gathering with Cambodian SMEs on Saturday (Jun. 27), the premier urged businesses to prioritize product quality, integrity, and consumer safety.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet recalled a recent visit to a provincial noodle shop, where a server quietly advised him not to order the beef meatballs because they were unsafe. He said the incident underscored the need for businesses to take responsibility for the products they sell.

“If you know a product is unsafe, please don’t sell it to others,” the prime minister said, stressing that protecting consumers' health should be a shared responsibility.

He added that while the government will continue supporting businesses by simplifying administrative procedures, the private sector must strengthen internal quality control and uphold food safety standards instead of relying solely on government enforcement.

On the occasion, the prime minister said improving product quality is essential to building consumer confidence and enhancing the competitiveness of Cambodian products.
