(Phnom Penh): China called on Cambodia and Thailand to resolve their border disputes peacefully and in line with existing agreements, according to Senate Spokesperson Chea Thyrith, spokesperson for Senate President Hun Sen
Speaking on Saturday (Jun. 27) on the outcomes of Senate President Hun Sen's recent visit to China, Chea Thyrith said Chinese President Xi Jinping told Samdech Techo Hun Sen that Beijing is closely monitoring the border situation and supports a peaceful resolution.
The spokesperson underlined that China backs Cambodia's efforts to settle disputes through international law rather than armed conflict.
It should be noted that Cambodia plans to bring the Mom Bei area, Ta Moan Thom Temple, and Ta Krabey Temple disputes before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). For overlapping maritime claims in the Gulf of Thailand, it has initiated compulsory conciliation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) after Thailand withdrew from the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU 44).
