(Svay Rieng): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said the Royal Government regards agriculture as the "stomach of the nation" and fisheries as its "protein engine," underscoring their vital role in ensuring food security and driving economic development.
The premier spoke on Wednesday (Jul. 1) during the National Fish Day celebration in Svay Rieng Province.
"The Royal Government has always regarded agriculture as the 'stomach of the nation,' while fisheries are the 'protein engine of the nation' because fish provide a sustainable source of protein that can be preserved. Fish are a popular food among people from all walks of life and are rich in essential micronutrients," the prime minister said.
He added that resilient, sustainable and inclusive development is the fourth priority of the Royal Government's Pentagonal Strategy β Phase I, with sustainable management of natural resources, cultural heritage and tourism forming the second pillar, and agricultural and rural development the third.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said the National Agricultural Development Policy 2022β2030 aims to modernise the sector, boost competitiveness, strengthen food security, and ensure the sustainable management of land, forests and fisheries resources.
The prime minister said the government's agricultural extension policy focuses on equipping farmers with modern farming knowledge, promoting the adoption of new technologies, and implementing strategic plans to develop agricultural subsectors.
On the occasion, the prime minister also commended the leadership and officials of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for their efforts to strengthen the sector, while acknowledging that agriculture continues to face challenges, particularly from global market fluctuations that have driven volatility in agricultural commodity prices.
