(Kampong Cham): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said the upgraded National Road No. 7 will strengthen Kampong Cham's tourism sector by improving accessibility, reducing travel time, and making the province's attractions more appealing to visitors.
Speaking on Tuesday (July 7) at the inauguration of National Road No. 7 (Skun–Kampong Cham), the premier said the improved highway will also support growth in tourism, hospitality, agriculture, and industry.
Citing a report by Minister of Public Works and Transport Peng Ponea, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said the USD 117.65 million project was financed primarily through a concessional loan from China, with the remaining funding provided by the Royal Government of Cambodia.
The upgraded 45-kilometre road features four lanes with asphalt concrete and reinforced concrete pavement. It is projected to achieve an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of 15.27 per cent, underscoring its long-term economic value.
Samdech Thipadei added that motorists will not be required to pay tolls to use the road.
He noted that many travellers from Cambodia's northeastern provinces had previously avoided Kampong Cham by taking National Roads No. 8 and No. 11 because the old route via Kizuna Bridge and Skun was often congested and time-consuming. With the upgrade complete, travel time along the route has been cut from about one hour to around 30 minutes, reducing transportation costs and improving regional connectivity.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also highlighted that easier journey will encourage more visitors to Kampong Cham's attractions, including Teuk Chha and Phnom Pros–Phnom Srei.
