(Kampong Cham): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called on transport companies to comply with legal vehicle weight limits, saying protecting Cambodia's road infrastructure requires businesses to avoid overloading trucks beyond the limits set by law.

Speaking on Tuesday (July 7) at the inauguration of National Road No. 7 (Skun–Kampong Cham) in Kampong Cham Province, the premier said the Royal Government recently amended the Law on Roads, raising the maximum legal weight limit for cargo vehicles from 40 tonnes to 50 tonnes to reflect improvements in road quality.

He urged transport operators to respect the revised limit while warning against carrying excessive loads.

"Transport companies aim for profit, but it must be earned legally. The law isn't meant to burden businesses or the public; instead, it seeks a balance that lets transport operators thrive while protecting public infrastructure," he said.

The prime minister also instructed authorities to strengthen the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of vehicle weight inspection stations to ensure stricter enforcement against overloaded vehicles.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei commended the Ministry of Public Works and Transport for improving weight-limit inspections. He called for sustained enforcement to protect the country's roads.

He warned that overloaded trucks can quickly damage infrastructure built with public funds, including projects financed through government borrowing and the national budget.

He added that protecting roads is a shared responsibility and that preserving road infrastructure will maximise public investment while delivering long-term benefits to millions of road users.
