(Phnom Penh): A tree begins as a small sprout. A national movement also begins with a small action.

The Green Sprout Exhibition is much more than an exhibition of tree saplings. It is a symbol of Cambodia’s long-term vision, a vision in which every citizen becomes a guardian of nature, every community contributes to protecting natural resources, and every generation inherits a greener country than the one before.

From 10 to 13 July, the Ministry of Environment invites every Cambodian to visit the Green Sprout Exhibition, receive free tree saplings, and become part of a nationwide movement that extends far beyond these four days.

The exhibition is not only about planting trees.

It is about planting values.

It is about nurturing a culture that loves nature, respects natural resources, and understands that protecting the environment is one of the greatest investments we can make in our country’s future.

For many years, development was often measured by what we built.

Today, we understand that true development must also be measured by what we protect.

Healthy forests provide clean air, clean water, fertile soil, biodiversity, food security, and opportunities for sustainable tourism. They reduce the impacts of floods, droughts, and extreme heat. They improve public health and strengthen our economy.

Every natural resource we conserve today becomes an asset that continues serving our children and grandchildren.

That is why loving nature is not simply an environmental responsibility.

It is an act of patriotism.

It is an investment in national prosperity.

It is a commitment to future generations.

The Ministry of Environment has prepared five million tree saplings for free distribution this year as part of its long-term strategy to expand Cambodia’s tree cover through broad public participation. But the ministry’s greatest ambition is not measured only by the number of saplings distributed.

Its greatest ambition is to cultivate millions of citizens who naturally care for the trees they plant.

A sapling placed into the hands of a child can grow into a tree.

More importantly, it can grow into a lifelong love for nature.

This is how lasting change happens, not through a single campaign, but through a national culture in which protecting forests, conserving water, respecting wildlife, reducing pollution, and planting trees become everyday habits.

This movement also supports Cambodia’s long-term vision of sustainable development and carbon neutrality. Every tree planted absorbs carbon dioxide, releases oxygen, cools the surrounding environment, protects biodiversity, and strengthens the country’s natural carbon sinks.

While achieving carbon neutrality requires action across many sectors, including energy, transport, agriculture, industry, and waste management, healthy forests remain one of Cambodia’s greatest natural strengths in that journey.

The Green Sprout Exhibition reminds us that every Cambodian has a role.

Students can plant trees at school.

Families can green their homes.

Farmers can restore tree cover around farms and water sources.

Businesses can expand green spaces in workplaces.

Communities can protect forests and public parks.

Together, millions of small actions become one great national achievement.

One tree may seem insignificant.

But one million trees change a landscape.

Five million trees strengthen a nation.

And millions of citizens who love nature can transform the future of Cambodia.

As we prepare for the Green Sprout Exhibition, let us remember that the event lasts only four days.

The movement it represents should last forever.

Let us come together, not simply to receive a tree sapling, but to make a promise.

A promise to love nature.

A promise to protect our natural resources.

A promise to care for every tree we plant.

A promise to leave Cambodia cleaner, greener, healthier, and more resilient than we found it.
Because the greatest legacy we can leave our children is not only a stronger economy or better infrastructure.

It is a living Cambodia, rich in forests, abundant in biodiversity, secure in its natural resources, resilient to climate change, and moving confidently toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.

The Green Sprout Exhibition begins with a seedling.

Its true destination is the heart of every Cambodian.
