(China): Shanghai Spacesail Technologies Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese commercial satellite communications company, expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities to provide satellite internet and communications services in Cambodia.
The company’s President Jason Jie Zheng paid a courtesy call on Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on 17 July 2026 on the sidelines of the 2026 World AI Conference.
During the meeting, Zheng briefed the prime minister on the company's operations, highlighting its focus on satellite communications and the development of the Qianfan ("Thousand Sails") Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, one of China's major commercial space initiatives aimed at delivering high-speed global internet connectivity.
He said Cambodia's rapid economic development has made the country an attractive destination for investment in satellite-based internet and communications services.
For his part, Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed the company's interest in investing in Cambodia, emphasizing that the provision of high-quality internet and communications services is one of the country's key priorities. He noted that the Royal Government is currently focused on strengthening existing telecommunications infrastructure while encouraging further investment in the sector.
The prime minister noted that the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications is developing a regulatory framework for satellite internet and communications services. Once adopted, he said, the government will prioritise expanding connectivity to remote and underserved rural communities while ensuring appropriate safeguards against the misuse of the technology.
He encouraged Shanghai Spacesail Technologies to continue discussions with the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications to explore concrete opportunities for investment and cooperation in Cambodia.
