(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet received a courtesy call from Kash Patel, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States, at the Peace Palace on Wednesday (Jul. 22).
During the meeting, Kash Patel expressed his appreciation to the Royal Government of Cambodia for its continued cooperation and close partnership with the FBI.
He also commended Cambodia's efforts and operations in combating online scams.
The FBI director noted that online scams are not an issue confined to any single country. In this regard, he emphasised that effectively addressing this challenge requires strong regional and global commitment and cooperation to combat such crimes collectively, rather than assigning blame to one another.
He further reaffirmed the United States' firm commitment to continuing its cooperation and partnership with Cambodian law enforcement agencies and expressed confidence that Cambodia-US relations would continue to grow even stronger.
In response, Samdech Thipadei highly valued the positive progress in Cambodia-US relations across a wide range of sectors, including the economy, trade, investment, defence, and security.
Samdech Thipadei affirmed that both countries enjoy excellent cooperation in the field of security and reiterated Cambodia's commitment to continuing close cooperation with the US in combating transnational crime, drug trafficking, and online scams.
Samdech Thipadei added that Cambodia will host an international conference on combating online scams in September 2026 to help strengthen international cooperation in addressing this regional and global challenge.
He also thanked the United States for its continued cooperation in information sharing and capacity building for Cambodian law enforcement officials.
Before concluding the meeting, both sides exchanged views on the future direction of security cooperation between Cambodia and the US in combating transnational crime, drug trafficking, and online scams, while underscoring the importance of continued information sharing and capacity building to enhance the capabilities of law enforcement officers.
