(Phnom Penh): Cambodia and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties during a meeting between Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the ASEAN Ministerial Meetings in Manila, the Philippines, according to a press release seen by Fresh News on Saturday (Jul. 25).

Both sides welcomed the positive momentum in Cambodia-US relations, reflected in the increase of high-level exchanges, expanding trade and investment, strengthened defence cooperation and closer collaboration in combating transnational crime. They also welcomed the recent signing of the Open Skies Agreement as a significant milestone in enhancing bilateral connectivity and economic cooperation.

As Country Coordinator for ASEAN-US Dialogue Relations, Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn reaffirmed Cambodia’s steadfast commitment to advancing the ASEAN-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and preparing meaningful commemorative activities marking the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-US dialogue relations in 2027.

Cambodian foreign minister also expressed deep appreciation to the United States, particularly President Donald J. Trump, in facilitating the ceasefire agreement and the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, as well as for the United States’ continued attention to the Cambodia-Thailand border issue. He further reaffirmed Cambodia’s unwavering commitment to resolving the border issue peacefully in accordance with international law and existing bilateral agreements.

Secretary Rubio reaffirmed the United States’ firm commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations with Cambodia and commended Cambodia’s proactive role as Country Coordinator in advancing the ASEAN-US CSP. On Cambodia-Thailand border issue, Secretary Rubio reiterated the United States’ ongoing support for lasting and peaceful settlement of the dispute and President Donald J. Trump’s continued close attention to the situation.
