(Siem Reap): The 11th Angkor Empire International Marathon 2026 attracted 6,500 runners from 52 countries, a 25 percent increase over last year's event, underscoring Cambodia's growing appeal as a destination for international sporting events and sports tourism.

Held against the backdrop of the iconic Angkor Wat, the marathon brought together 5,450 Cambodian participants and 1,050 international runners from 51 foreign countries. China led international participation with 201 runners, followed by Japan and the United Kingdom, each with 100 participants.

Tourism Minister Huot Hak joined the event, which was presided over by Senior Minister Thong Khon, President of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the growing number of participants, particularly international athletes, reflects the increasing appeal of international sporting events in the Angkor region. Beyond being a major sporting event, the marathon serves as an important driver for promoting Sports Tourism, attracting international visitors, and showcasing Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage, civilization, and diverse tourism potential.

The event also provides an important platform to promote “Cambodia: Kingdom of Wonder” to the world, while highlighting Cambodia as an attractive tourism destination renowned for its warm hospitality.

On the sidelines of the marathon, Minister Huot Hak met with a delegation of Chinese runners and highlighted Cambodia's implementation of a 14-day visa exemption for Chinese citizens. This initiative aims to facilitate travel and further boost tourism flows between Cambodia and China.

The minister added that, in line with the “Cambodia-China Tourism Year” and with the high approval of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, the Royal Government has granted visa-free entry to Chinese citizens traveling to Cambodia, allowing them to stay for up to 14 days, from 15 June to 15 October 2026.

During this four-month period, all holders of Chinese passports may travel to Cambodia without applying for a visa in advance and without paying any visa fee. Travelers are only required to complete the Cambodia e-Arrival Card.
