(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen set a national target for women to hold 50 percent of commune clerk positions nationwide by 2050, calling for stronger efforts to close the gender gap in local administration.

Speaking during a meeting with the Cambodian National Council for Women on Friday (Aug. 14), Samdech Techo urged political parties to actively identify, train, and support capable women for local leadership roles, while ensuring female candidates are placed in electable positions on commune council candidate lists.

On the occasion, Samdech Techo highlighted Kampong Speu Province as a positive example of educated women's participation in local administration and encouraged other provinces to strengthen opportunities for women in public service.

He also called for greater inclusion of indigenous women in commune administrations.
