(Phnom Penh): Royal Cambodian Army Commander General Mao Sophan and Malaysian Chief of Army General Tan Sri Azhan held their first formal video conference on Tuesday (Aug. 18), reaffirming their commitment to deepening military cooperation between the two countries' land forces.
According to a press release dated 18 August 2026, both sides expressed satisfaction with the positive development of bilateral army-to-army relations and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening friendship, mutual trust, and practical cooperation, building upon the signing of the Terms of Reference on bilateral cooperation in 2025.
During the meeting, General Mao Sophan also expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s important contribution to peace and stability, including its support for the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord and the deployment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) which has contributed to promoting peace, stability, and confidence-building along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
Both army chiefs exchanged views on the future direction of bilateral cooperation and agreed to maintain close coordination to further deepen the relationship between the Royal Cambodian Army and the Malaysian Army.
The meeting concluded in a warm and cordial atmosphere, reflecting the longstanding friendship, mutual trust, and growing partnership between the two armies.
