(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for the proper use of traditional Khmer attire, emphasising that maintaining authentic styles is essential to protecting Cambodia’s national identity and preventing confusion with neighbouring cultures.
Speaking at the 11th Nationwide Gathering with lay officiant’s (Achar and Acharini) at the National Institute of Education on Wednesday (Aug. 19), the prime minister instructed the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, along with relevant institutions, to provide clear guidelines and training for wedding service providers on traditional dress codes.
He highlighted that while regional attire shares similarities with neighbouring countries, specific elements, such as the Khmer sbai and the role of wedding planners, require strict adherence to traditional standards.
To ensure broad reach, Prime Minister Hun Manet supported the use of digital platforms and video dissemination to educate the public. He noted that while cultural traditions can evolve naturally, evolution must remain within established boundaries to safeguard national heritage.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet directed the Ministry of Cult and Religion to collaborate with relevant authorities to train ceremony leaders and wedding planners, ensuring all religious and cultural rituals strictly align with authentic Khmer customs.
