(Phnom Penh): The ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) on Thursday (Aug. 20) visited the Poipet International Border Checkpoint in Banteay Meanchey Province to conduct observation, verification, and reporting following the implementation of the ceasefire.
According to Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, the field visit was coordinated by the Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG) and led by the AOT-KH Head of Mission from the Philippines.
The delegation arrived at the checkpoint in Kbal Spean 1 Village, O’ Chrov District, Poipet Municipality, at approximately 09:20 a.m. to assess the post-ceasefire situation and inspect damage caused to local commercial infrastructure.
The ministry emphasized that the affected sites belong to innocent civilians who relied on them for their daily livelihoods. These civilian facilities suffered severe destruction and remain unable to resume operations to this day, following December 2025 airstrikes by Thai military forces using F-16 fighter jets.
The spokesperson further noted that the targeted sites include locations in Phsar Kandal Village, Phsar Kandal District, Poipet Municipality, situated deep within Cambodia’s sovereign territory, approximately 8.2 kilometers from the Poipet International Checkpoint.
The Ministry of National Defence reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia's full support for the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), highlighting the crucial importance of strengthening its role and mandate to verify on-site conditions and ensure full adherence to the ceasefire.
Cambodia reiterated its commitment to upholding the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on 27 December 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on 26 October 2025, and all related agreements aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and mutual trust.
