(Kratie): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered authorities in Phnom Penh and six provinces along the Mekong River to strengthen flood preparedness and emergency response as rising water levels threaten communities, stressing that saving lives and protecting residents must remain the top priority.

The directive covers Phnom Penh, Stung Treng, Kratie, Kampong Cham, Tboung Khmum, Kandal, and Prey Veng.

Speaking at the inauguration of three road sections in Kratie on Tuesday (Aug. 25), Samdech Thipadei also ordered all branches of the armed forces to remain on standby for evacuations, rescue operations, and other emergency assistance.

The prime minister acknowledged that natural disasters cannot always be prevented but stressed that Cambodia must strengthen its capacity to respond quickly and effectively when emergencies occur.

He called for adequate stocks of rescue equipment, medical supplies, and other essential resources, while urging authorities and security forces to maintain rapid-response capabilities to protect lives and assist affected communities.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, sustained heavy rainfall across the wider Mekong basin has pushed water levels steadily higher in Cambodia. In Kratie, the Mekong River reached 21.73 metres on 24 August, affecting communities, agricultural production, and infrastructure.

Emergency operations are already underway in affected areas. In Prek Sanday Village, Chhloung District, local authorities have evacuated 65 of 79 flood-affected families to higher ground, while rescue and monitoring efforts continue in other vulnerable communities.
