(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen urged nations to safeguard their sovereignty and determine their own future, warning against allowing superpower rivalry to dictate the fate of individual countries.

Samdech Techo delivered an opening address on Thursday (Aug. 27) at the Second Inter-Parliamentary Speakers' Conference (ISC-2), under the theme “Solidarity for Peace and Shared Prosperity: Strengthening International Law and Peaceful Resolution of Conflicts.”

"Superpower pens should not control our nations' fates. We hold the fate of our countries in our own hands,” said Samdech Techo.

The Senate president called on national leaders to reaffirm their commitment to international law, peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and shared prosperity, while strengthening parliamentary diplomacy as a tool for promoting dialogue, rebuilding trust, and preventing conflicts.

On the occasion, Samdech Techo underlined that regional parliamentary networks have an important role to play in defending the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful settlement of disputes enshrined in the UN and ASEAN Charters.

He also proposed considering the establishment of a parliamentary ceasefire observer team to strengthen international monitoring and help prevent localised border clashes from escalating into prolonged conflicts.
