(Phnom Penh): Phnom Penh Capital City, Kingdom of Cambodia, has been named a recipient of the “Safe, Active and Health-Enabling Transport: Advancing Health and Reducing Inequities in Urban Mobility” award by the World Health Organisation (WHO) Western Pacific Region, recognising the capital’s efforts to improve road safety and promote healthier urban mobility.

The recognition was announced ahead of the 11th Global Conference of the Alliance for Healthy Cities, which will be held in Sydney, Australia, from 1-3 September 2026.

Phnom Penh was recognised for its Safe School Zone Project, which combines road safety data, infrastructure improvements, 30 km/h speed management, enforcement, education and community engagement around high-risk schools.

According to WHO Western Pacific Region, the initiative significantly improved safety conditions at two participating schools, with their safety ratings rising from one star to 4.2 and 3.5 stars, respectively.

The project also contributed to lower vehicle speeds, provided road safety training to 500 students, and was associated with a reported 58 per cent reduction in self-reported crashes.

The award underscores Phnom Penh’s efforts to create safer, healthier, and more equitable urban environments, particularly for children and communities surrounding schools.
