(Phnom Penh): The Royal Government of Cambodia formally lodged a strong protest against the unauthorised entry of a Royal Thai Air Force’s helicopter into Cambodian territory, which is a clear violation of Cambodia’s sovereign territory, international law, and existing bilateral commitments, according to a press release seen by Fresh News on Friday (Sep. 4).

According to the press release, on 3 September 2026, a Thai military helicopter intruded 400 metres into Cambodian airspace near the Daung International Border Checkpoint in Kamrieng District, Battambang Province.

The Royal Government of Cambodia emphasised that this action violates Article 1 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago, 7 December 1944), which affirms that every State has complete and exclusive sovereignty over the airspace above its territory; Article 3(c) of the same Convention, which prohibits State aircraft from flying over the territory of another State without authorisation; and Point 6 of the De-escalation Measures stated in the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC), signed on 27 December 2025.

The Royal Government demanded that Thailand cease such actions immediately and honour its commitment to de-escalating the situation, fostering mutual trust, facilitating peaceful settlement of disputes, thereby restoring peace, stability, and good-neighbourly relations along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

The Royal Government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the peaceful resolution of border issues and the maintenance of friendly relations between the two neighbouring nations.
