(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet urged the public to take greater responsibility for keeping the environment clean, stressing that proper waste disposal and collective action are essential to public health and quality of life.

Speaking at the inauguration of Luang Me Hospital on Wednesday (Sep. 16), the premier praised authorities for clearing drains and collecting rubbish but said lasting cleanliness requires public participation.

“We cannot keep removing rubbish endlessly,” he said, calling on people to dispose of waste responsibly and avoid littering.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei cited the trial opening of the former Phnom Penh International Airport (Pochentong) ahead of the 2025 Khmer New Year celebrations as an example of effective public cooperation. Despite tens of thousands of visitors, he noted that the site remained largely free of litter because people disposed of their waste responsibly.

He also noted that Phnom Penh now generates around 4,100 tonnes of waste per day, up from about 3,000 tonnes previously, underscoring the need for stronger waste management and public cooperation.
