(Pursat): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called on political parties and politicians to put national interests first and refrain from spreading false or distorted information that could undermine public confidence and the morale of Cambodia’s armed forces.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Oct. 1) during the inauguration ceremony of National Road No. 10 in Pursat province.

The premier urged political actors to exercise responsibility when sharing unverified information, particularly at a time when, he said, Cambodia faces external aggression and its soldiers and police remain prepared to defend the country’s territory.

“Do whatever you wish, but do nothing that affects the morale of citizens or the army, especially by taking false information and distorting it,” Samdech Thipadei said.

As an example, the premier rejected claims that Cambodian soldiers were being killed every day, saying no such incidents had occurred.

Samdech Thipadei also criticised an unnamed veteran political leader, questioning why the individual had remained silent when shells struck Cambodian homes and pagodas but supported allegations that Cambodian forces had fired on civilian areas.

The prime minister maintained that Cambodian forces targeted only military positions and responded only after coming under attack.

He called the accusation unfair and incorrect, arguing that repeating claims from the opposing side to attack Cambodia, its people and armed forces undermines national interests.
