(Battambang): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said hydropower accounts for 62 per cent of Cambodia’s electricity supply and is protected from global oil price fluctuations through fixed-price contracts.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony for 2,001 students at the University of Management and Economics in Battambang, the premier said the remaining 38 per cent, generated from coal and heavy fuel oil, remains vulnerable to rising fuel costs.
The premier said the government has spent approximately USD 500 million to stabilise fuel and electricity prices, including USD 50 million from Electricité du Cambodge.
He added that without government intervention, petrol and diesel prices could have been 500 to 600 riel higher per litre, increasing transport costs and inflationary pressures.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also urged the public to use fuel and electricity efficiently to reduce energy expenses.
